Ultrasound
Obstetric and gynecologic ultrasound tests, or sonograms, are conveniently performed here in our offices by our experienced staff. All scans are reviewed by Dr. Kirchner and the information gained will be used in determining the next course of action.
Two methods of ultrasonography are performed. A transvaginal sonogram involves placing the narrow transducer into the vagina and is very good for visualizing the ovaries or seeing the pregnancy in the early stages, i.e. less than 12 weeks gestation. An abdominal sonogram involves placing the transducer on the lower abdominal wall and is used for visualizing the uterus, especially when it is larger and pregnancies in the second and third trimesters. This approach requires the bladder to be full whereas the transvaginal approach is better when the bladder is empty.
We understand that for the obstetrical patient, the viewing of your new baby is exciting for all. We welcome one or two adults to be present with you during your sonogram but children are not allowed. Our technicians are trying to get the best views possible and intense concentration is required. The presence of a child is distracting and may lend to mistakes or delays. Please make childcare arrangements so we do not have to reschedule.
3-D and 4-D Sonograms
Technological advances now allow for the creation of three-dimensional imaging (3D) of your new baby as well as viewing in motion (4D). This is an exciting way to “see” your new baby before he/she arrives! The pictures and video are loaded onto a DVD so you can view them whenever you want or show your friends and family when they drop by for a visit.
The 3D and 4D sonograms are for your personal enjoyment and are not a medically useful or indicated procedure. Thus, they are not covered by your insurance. Please call the scheduler for times and costs.
Dr. Kirchner looks forward to meeting you and serving as your OB/GYN throughout your life’s journey.
